Sonata form is usually the Third movement of Classical composition. It usually has 3 definite parts and there is a fourth that is an optional addition. This form starts with an Exposition, which introduces 2 main themes which are usually in contrasting styles. They are typically heard 2 times so the listener may become completely familiar with them. The next section is called the Developments, or as in essay writing may be called the “body”. This is where the composer may use fragments or “motive” of ideas to create a tense or unstable feeling. The third section is the Recapitulation and is comparable to an essay writing portion we would call the conclusion, where all main ideas are brought back around to resolve any conflicts as the main themes are restated. As an optional final segment, composers may also add a “Coda” which means “the tail” to round out the composition. 2.
