York University HRM 3400 HRM 3400 Assignment 4.
Introduction
The job that I have chosen is completed at my workplace, Winners. I am a retail sales associate and my job description entails different
tasks, one of them being stock and replenishment. I’ve chosen to analyze the task of completing stock for the job safety analysis due to my
familiarity with the task. I work at Winners at least three days a week at minimum, and up to 6 times a week maximum. I am usually on the floor
making sales or on cashier duties, but at least once a week I have a ‘stock shift’ which involves me being in the back room of the store and deboxing and de-bagging up to 20 boxes of clothes, while I censor tag and hang all the clothes on a rolling rack. This task involves a number of
specific steps, and since I complete the task at least once a week, developing the risks and hazards shouldn’t be too hard, which makes it perfect
for this assignment. The main purpose of a stock shift is to ensure there is a full supply of clothes on the sales floor that is demanded by customers
(such as many sizes of each piece of clothing). Another purpose of this task is to reduce the amount of stock boxes in the back room of the store to
make it less crowded, because the room is not very big and when there are over 30 boxes of stock, the risk of an accident occurring can be likely.
Additionally, Winners customers are always asking sales associates if the store has more sizes of clothes in the back room, and if the boxes have
not been back stocked, there is no way of knowing whether we do or don’t have sizes, and this can ultimately cause the store to lose money in
sales.
Conclusion
By completing this assignment, I learned that there is a possibility of certain hazards occurring that I never previously thought about. Some
hazards in the task I’ve analyzed are so obvious such as cutting yourself with the utility knife, but since I complete this task so frequently, the
thought of possibly cutting my hand hasn’t even crossed my mind. Although most of the risk ratings for the hazards were low or medium, completing
this job safety analysis has made me consciously aware of even the slight possibility of the hazards that can occur, and when I complete my next
stock shift I believe I will be more careful when completing the steps included in the task to reduce the probability. Furthermore, I’ve learned how to
determine the probability and risks from determining the likelihood of exposure, occurrence, and consequences in a much simpler way by following
the risk tables in the document the professor has provided us with. I thoroughly enjoyed coming up with all the answers and seeing the risk ratings
for each hazard, which is something I wasn’t fully aware of before.
